We wanted to say a big hello to any new or returning visitors to our website and social media channels by putting together a little blog with 10 things that you didn’t know about us!

Snowdon, Wales

1. We’re based in South Wales!

If you’ve spoken to us recently at an exhibition/event or over the phone – this might not come as a surprise to you, the accent is a little bit of a giveaway, we know! But we install solar PV and other relevant technology right across the UK.

The Solar Plants family

2. We have over 70 members of staff!

From electricians to energy advisers, to customer support and marketing – we have a huge team working behind the scenes to provide a reliable energy solution for your home and once your system is installed, the team will be here to support you throughout the lifetime of your system – we’re here for the long term.

We love dogs!

3. Our headquarters is accustomed to 4 legged friends!

We’re all huge dog lovers here at Solar Plants and you can often find our four-legged friends snoozing under our desks or trying to steal a snack at lunchtime! They’re really great company within the office and it’s great to get the team outdoors at lunchtime to take them for a quick walk.

Our office and warehouse in Port Talbot, Wales

4. Solar Plants began as (and still is) a family-run business!

Back in 2011, Solar Plants founder, Tom, was looking for a reliable energy solution for his home. After failing to find a reliable installation company, Tom decided to source his own PV technology and complete the installation himself. After family and friends all requested PV systems for themselves too, Tom’s son Oliver, Oliver’s wife, Leanne, and business partner, Dan, all got on board and there was no stopping Solar Plant’s success since this point!

The UK’s first Tesla Powerwall installation

5. We installed the first Tesla Powerwall in the UK!

The nationwide story was covered in the Guardian, which many people still share across social media and use to visit our website! The installation was completed for a customer in Cardiff and we still continue to provide battery storage systems for customers across the UK.

Ian Hewson, the brains behind the off-grid department!

6. We have an award-winning off-grid department!

Headed by industry leader, Ian Hewson, we have completed a huge variety of off-grid projects for a range of different projects for business’ and homes. We cover these in greater deal in blogs on our website and have a video with off-grid customer, Debbie, about her experience with Ian and the team! Ian pops up in our next point too… he really is a master in the field.

Ian, Daniel and the team from Specific

7. Ian also helped to design and install Swansea University’s active classroom!

Using the UK’s largest Aquion salt-water battery, Ian assisted the design and installation of Swansea Unversity’s new bay campus active classroom which produces more energy than it uses.

The team at the UK Business Awards in 2016!

8. We have won over 10 prestigious awards!

With a team who live and breathe our strong family business ethics, Solar Plants has excelled within the industry, winning a host of awards at local and national awards ceremonies. In November 2016 we won the highest accolade, Best UK Business of the Year, at the UK Business Awards, beating blue chip brands including Virgin Money, Barclays, Aldi and O2!  And, more recently, we won Gold at the UK Customer Experience Awards for Best Customer-Centric Culture.

The SolarEdge monitoring panel

9. We have over 8,000 customers and monitor every individual PV system!

This installation map shows every installation including solar, storage, commercial and upgrade since we formed in 2011. We have energy advisers and installation teams throughout the UK! Our dedicated monitoring department monitors every single PV system to ensure there are no faults or issues with customers systems and alert them if they do identify anything. It’s not often that a company identifies a fault before a customer even knows that they have one!

10. We attend around 90 shows, events and exhibitions each year!

Back when we started taking part in events in 2015, we attended around 5 of the biggest summer agricultural shows in the calendar. We now visit an outdoor agricultural show almost every weekend in summer and attend many indoor exhibitions throughout the winter months. This year we’re attending our first Fully Charged Live Show and took on our longest ever show – Grand Designs in London which was 9 days long! We also have a year-round stand at the National Self Build and Renovation Centre, a great FREE visitor centre if you’re renovating or self-building. The centre has over 240 stands showcasing the latest home and building technology, products and materials.
