About the author:
Hi, I’m Lily, the Marketing Officer at Solar Plants. As part of our Green Week campaign, I wanted to outline some of the great benefits of solar PV and explain why over 1 million UK homeowners have switched to generating their own solar energy!
In 2018, electricity prices hit a 10 year high, with staggering price hikes from the Big 6 energy companies dominating monthly headline news. The Office of National Statistics shows that over the past 15 years, since Facebook was launched back in 2003, energy prices have increased by 280% and wholesale prices have increased by 50% in the past 12 months alone.
On top of this, a recent report stated that air pollution is killing nearly as many people as smoking in Britain. Our homes, cars and lives are vastly powered by dirty, polluting fossil fuels which is causing toxic levels of air pollution. Researchers say that dirty air is killing 800,000 people a year in Europe.
After the hottest February ever, reports of insect populations collapsing, wildfire and flooding affecting our forests and coasts, it may be time to become more conscious of our actions. Humans only account for 0.01% of all life on the planet but we have managed to cause the loss of 83% of all wild animals and half plants.
The solar solution
By joining over 1 million UK homeowners who have switched to solar energy, you can help to pave the way for a brighter future. The way that we use energy is changing as we move away from polluting fossil fuels. With a solar PV installation for your home, you have the opportunity to generate your own guilt-free energy, giving you independence from the National Grid.
A solar PV system will generate plenty of free energy for you to use. The more solar energy you can use in the day to power your home, the less you will need to draw from the National Grid, saving you hundreds of pounds a year. A solar PV installation will also increase the value of your property; a home with a great energy efficiency rating and low energy bills is a hugely attractive feature for potential buyers.
How does solar work?
During the day, solar panels on your roof turn sunlight into DC electricity. An inverter within your home will turn the DC energy into AC so that you can use this energy to power all of your home appliances. You can also store excess energy in a battery to use during the evenings too!
Solar myth bust
Myth: “Solar panels don’t work in the UK, it’s not sunny enough!”
Truth: Solar panels do not need direct sunlight to work, they simply work from ambient daylight and therefore, will power your home all year round.
Myth: “Solar power is too new, it’s better to wait until the technology advances.”
Truth: The technology behind solar is more than 100 years old and technology advances have allowed the cost of panels to be significantly reduced — meaning there has never been a better time to invest in solar!
Myth: “Solar panels will make my home look unattractive.”
Truth: With a variety of modern solar PV options such as sleek black panels, integrated solar, solar tiles and solar roofs, a solar PV installation will be a home improvement that you can be proud to show off.
A clean energy solution for your home
On average, a Solar Plants customer will save over 45 tonnes of CO2 over a period of 30 years!
