Should I repair or replace my broken inverter?

Inverter issues

Series inverters typically last between 5 – 7 years due to the consistent workload they have; not only doing the conversion from DC energy to AC, but also managing the voltage (Maximum Power Point Tracking) through all the panels.  As a result, inverter warranties typically only last for 5 years and now many PV owners in the UK who had their solar installed when the tariff was at its highest are experiencing difficulties with their inverter, or, it has stopped working completely.

Has your inverter
stopped working?

The signs

Before deciding whether to replace or repair your inverter, double check these signs to ensure the issue definitely lies with your inverter.

Generation meter not flashing

If your system isn’t working, then your generation meter will not be flashing in daylight hours.  This may not necessarily be down to the actual inverter and it could potentially be a cabling issue, but 9 times out of 10 it is down to a faulty inverter.

Warning lights

Check the screen on your inverter to see if there are any warning lights or messages, double check these warnings against the inverter manual which can usually found be online or in the pack given to you by your original installer.

Generation meter reading not increasing

Linked to the generation meter not flashing, if there is a problem with your system and no energy is being sent to your appliances, you will notice that the reading on your generation meter has not changed.

Check your monitoring

If you have monitoring, check current and historical generation measurements to see if there has been a notable change.  Be aware that your monitoring may not be working due to many other issues including a change in WIFI provider or movement/poor connection of a CT clamp.

Repair or replace?

The options

You made a significant investment in solar PV, so the decision you make today needs to reflect the value you place on your investment:

Repair

Whilst repair is sometimes possible, and is definitely cheaper in the short term, the lasting effects of a repair are unknown.  The problem could re-occur at anytime and generally the work is not guaranteed, meaning that you will inevitably have to replace your inverter at some point.

Replace

A new inverter will not only be more efficient, increasing your generation and FIT payments by working to its maximum capability, and should come with a longer warranty, some that will last for the remaining term of your tariff payments.  However, the initial outlay will be more expensive than a repair.

See our blog post here for more detail about pros and cons of repairing verses replacement.

The benefits of replacing

Here are some of the reasons why we only recommend SolarEdge replacement inverter technology.

Increased generation

SolarEdge Power Optimiser technology has been tested by industry magazine Photon and has been proven to increase generation by up to 25%.

20 year warranty

We offer a 20-year warranty on the latest high-performance SolarEdge HD Wave inverter, plus the SolarEdge Power Optimisers come with a 25-year warranty meaning that you never have to worry again.

Expert monitoring

A SolarEdge system gives you access to individual panel monitoring via your computer, tablet or phone allowing full visibility of the performance of your system. We also have a dedicated monitoring department who will alert you if any issues arise to give you full peace of mind.

Enhanced safety

Fire-fighting a house with a standard inverter will cause a high risk to occupants and firefighters, this is due to the high level of DC current that will still be live, even when power to the house is shut down. SolarEdge has SafeDC which reduces the voltage in the DC cables to a safe extra-low voltage when required.

The reason for choosing power optimised technology

The way SolarEdge technology works is unique, which is why it can increase generation and counteract the negative effects on your system of shading, thermal mismatch and manufacturers tolerances.  Watch this video to learn more about the technology and how it works.
